John David McAfee was a cybersecurity entrepreneur and Libertarian Party candidate for president of the United States in 2016 and 2020.[1][2][3]
McAfee died on June 23, 2021.[4]
Biography
McAfee was born in the United Kingdom and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. His early career experience included working for Missouri Pacific Railroad and NASA’s Institute for Space Studies. In the early 1980s, he worked for Lockheed. When the first computer virus struck in 1986, McAfee founded his own anti-virus technology company, McAfee Associates. He resigned from his software company in 1994 to advise start-ups, lecture, and pursue other projects.
McAfee fled the country in 2019 after claiming that he "hadn't filed taxes in 8 years." He was captured later that year by the Dominican Republic before being released. On October 3. 2020, McAfee was arrested by Spanish authorities by the United States behest. He was indicted by the United States federal court system in March 2021 on several charges. Spain granted the United States' extradition on June 22, 2021. Spanish authorities reported finding McAfee dead in his prison cell later that day.[4][5]
Elections
2020 presidential election
McAfee ran for president of the United States in 2020 as a Libertarian candidate.
The Libertarian Party selected Jo Jorgensen as its presidential nominee on May 23, 2020, during the Libertarian National Convention.[6] Spike Cohen was selected as the party's vice-presidential nominee the next day.[7]
The convention was originally scheduled to take place May 21-25, 2020, in Austin, Texas.[8] Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the nomination portion of the national convention was held online May 22-24.[9][10]
2016 presidential election
McAfee ran for president of the United States in 2016 as a Libertarian candidate.
The Libertarian National Convention was held on May 26-30, 2016, at the Rosen Centre Hotel & Resort in Orlando, Florida. Delegates selected Gary Johnson (L) as the party's nominee.[11]
