John David Preston is the chief circuit court judge for the 24th Judicial Circuit, which presides over Johnson, Lawrence, and Martin counties of Kentucky.[1] He was elected to the court on November 7, 2006, and re-elected without opposition in 2014.[2] Preston's current eight-year term expires on January 1, 2023.[3][4]

Education

Preston received his undergraduate degree in history from Harvard University and his J.D. from the University of Kentucky College of Law.[2]

Career

Before his election to the court, Preston served as a family court judge for the Kentucky family courts. From 1976 until his appointment as a family court judge in 2005, he practiced law in Paintsville, Kentucky. Preston has also previously served as an attorney for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as a mayor for the City of Paintsville, and as a state senator for the Kentucky State Senate.[2]
