Public Safety
The safety of our community will always be my top priority. We can’t just point to certain zip codes and pretend that crime is someone else’s problem. We are all impacted by crime regardless of where it occurs, and we all share in the responsibility to fight it.
- I’ll give the Baton Rouge Police Department the manpower needed to effectively fight crime in our communities. I’ll put an additional 200 officers on our streets, not just the 15 new officers planned for this year.
- I support the use of body cameras for BRPD and will work with the Council to create policies and procedures for their use.
- I’ll provide the Baton Rouge Fire Department and EMS with the tools they need to save lives. That’s why I fought to maintain fire department resources when others called for reductions. We cannot scrimp and save when it comes to public safety.
Traffic & Infrastructure
Traffic problems have plagued us for years. We must build upon the success of the Green Light Program and improve our traffic infrastructure.
- I will fix our bridges, build connector streets and support expanding roadways. Most importantly, we will create a real alternative to the interstate system for travel across our parish.
- I support the proposed BUMP plan that would connect interstates 10, 12 and 110 with U.S. 190 and Airline Highway. It can be done as a public private partnership at little or no cost to the taxpayers. This is the kind of outside the box thinking that Baton Rouge needs.
- I’ll make sure we design our roads to fight the traffic of tomorrow - not just fix the problems of today.
- We need an effective and efficient transit system in our community. Instead of providing a solution to our traffic problems, CATS has become part of the problem - with broken down buses clogging up our roads. The solution is simple: Hire a professional management company to run our transit system.
Education
The only thing that can never be taken away from you is your education. With a good education system, we will create a stronger economy and safer community. For too long, we have acted like educating our kids is solely the job of the School Board. It's time we commit our full resources to educating our children. Every option must be on the table.
- I will seek additional funding for Head Start programs and recruit great charter schools to give parents choices in their children's education.
- I will provide additional security resources to our schools to ensure the safety of our students and teachers.
- I will work with the Library Board to improve students' access to computer labs. Many of our kids lack Internet access at home.
- I believe that our City-Parish government can help Superintendent Warren Drake fix our schools.
Economic Development
Planning for our future includes creating good-paying jobs for our citizens.
- Develop our riverfront. East Baton Rouge has more than 12 miles of riverfront property, from the new bridge to the Iberville Parish line, and the only thing built on it is one casino. We may be the only city in America with so little development on its prime waterfront. I’ll make sure we no longer waste this beautiful resource.
- Create opportunities. Business development should happen all over our parish. That's why I created a North Baton Rouge economic opportunity zone to encourage businesses to open and redevelop land there.
- I’ll work with local Chambers of Commerce, civic groups, and businesses to make sure our city is on a path to sustainable economic prosperity.
