John Mathias Engler (b. October 12, 1948, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan) was the 46th governor of Michigan. Engler (R) served three terms from January 1, 1991, to January 1, 2003.[1]

Biography

Engler was born in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and was raised in Beal City, Michigan. He earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Michigan State University in 1970. He later received a J.D. from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1985.[1][2]

Political career

Governor of Michigan (1991-2003)

Engler was first elected as governor of Michigan in November 1990. He was inaugurated into office on January 1, 1991, and won re-election in 1994 and 1998.[2]

Michigan State Legislature (1970-1990)

Engler served for two decades in the Michigan State Legislature, including seven years as the state Senate majority leader.[2]

Elections

2002

Engler did not seek re-election in 2002. The governor's office flipped from Republican to Democratic control with Jennifer Granholm's victory.[3]
