Evans' campaign website highlighted the following issues:[5]
“ | Marriage Equality:
I believe that each individual is endowed with natural or unalienable rights. The right for adults to marry and engage in consensual relationships is chief among them. I’d like to add an amendment to the Iowa Constitution to take this debate off the table. Eventually I’d like to get the state government out of marriage completely, but we have to take this one step at a time.
We have a great example of the benefit of legalization in Colorado. Tens of millions in tax dollars have been collected, and used for schools, and drug education programs. Right now in Iowa, if you are African-American you are 8 times more likely to be arrested for pot possession. The usage between blacks and whites is nearly identical, so there is some racial profiling going on. We can stop arresting nonviolent people for nonviolent crimes, and stop ruining people’s futures over a plant.
I believe the state government should be as far removed from medical decisions as possible. Abortion should only be discussed with the individual, their doctor, and the individual’s family. Having people that vote for a living make these decisions is a terrible idea. Politicians are as far removed from the average voter as they can be.
I believe individuals also have the natural right to defend their property, family, and self. A well armed society is a polite society. Taking away the ability for people to defend themselves only creates victims. |
