Watkins ran for election to the Eighth Judicial District Court.
Primary: He was successful in the primary on June 10, 2014, receiving 25.9 percent of the vote. He competed against Phung Jefferson, William S. Skupa and Richard Scotti.
General: He was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 46.5 percent of the vote. He competed against Richard Scotti.

Watkins received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Missouri in 1977, and a J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1980.[3]
