John Gemmill
John C. Gemmill was a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One.[1] He was appointed to the court in 2001 by Republican Governor Jane Dee Hull.[2] He retired on June 30, 2016. Governor Doug Ducey selected Paul McMurdie as Gemmill's successor.
Gemmill was retained in 2004 and 2010.[3][4][5]
Gemmill served as the court's chief judge from 2006 to 2008.[6]
Judge Gemmill applied in 2012 for appointment to fill a vacancy on the Arizona Supreme Court.[7] Gov. Jan Brewer ultimately appointed Justice Ann Timmer to the seat.
Education
Gemmill received his B.S. in agriculture from the University of Arizona in 1971 and his J.D. from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in 1976.[6]
Career
Prior to his judicial career, Gemmill worked as an attorney in private practice for 25 years in Phoenix, Arizona.[6]

Judge Gemmill's term expired January 1, 2017. He did not file to stand for retention by voters in 2016.[8]
2010
Gemmill was retained to the Arizona Court of Appeals in 2010.[9]

Per the rules for judicial selection in Arizona, Gemmill faced his first retention election in 2004. He was retained to the Arizona Court of Appeals with 405,270 affirmative votes versus 157,600 negative votes.[10]
