John H. Wilson was a Bronx County Civil Court and Kings County Criminal Court judge. He took office as a civil court judge in 2005, following a November 2004 election. He was then assigned to the criminal court, effective January 2006. He was defeated in his bid for re-election in 2013 and stepped down when his term expired in 2014.[1][2]

Education

Wilson received his B.A. degree from Fordham University in 1983 and his J.D. degree from Pace School of Law in 1986.[1][2]

Career

Following graduation from law school, Wilson worked as a Bronx County assistant district attorney and then as senior trial associate for Hartford Insurance. He worked as a private practice lawyer beginning in 1992 and was elected to the Bronx County Civil Court in November of 2004. In January of 2006, he was also assigned to hear cases for the Brooklyn Criminal Court.[2]

Elections

2013

Wilson ran for election to the Supreme Court 12th Judicial District. General: He was defeated in the general election on November 5, 2013, after receiving 3.7 percent of the vote. Laura G. Douglas, Kevin P. Kuehner, Julia I. Rodriguez, Norma Ruiz, Larry S. Schachner and Robert D. Siano were also on the ballot, competing for three open seats.[3][4][5]

2012

Wilson ran for a seat on the 12th District Supreme Court. He was one of three candidates competing for two seats in the general election on November 6, receiving 3.8% of the vote.[6][7]

2009

On November 3, 2009, Wilson ran for the position of New York Supreme Court Justice for the 12th District (Bronx County). Five candidates ran for three seats.[8]

Work as an author

Judge Wilson is the author of a 26 page children's book called Hot House Flowers. The book was published on August 26, 2006, and has caused a controversy among immigration activists due to the books allegory that relates weeds in a greenhouse to illegal immigrants. Wilson has stated in his defense "I'm not calling immigrants weeds" and also went on to say, "...there's a big distinction between immigrants and illegal immigrants and there is nothing in this book that is intended to be anti-immigration."[9]
