John Hood is president of the John William Pope Foundation (JWPF), an organization which, according to its website, "makes grants to support public policy groups, educational institutions, humanitarian efforts and the arts."[1] JWPF aims to "ensure future generations have....the freedom to live, work, pursue individual interests, sustain family and prosper."[1] Hood has been president of JWPF since January 2015.[2] He is a contributing editor, author and columnist to various publications such as Business North Carolina, Reason Magazine and National Review as well as a recurring panelist on NC Spin, a weekly television show focused on North Carolina political and public affairs.[3][4][5]

Career

As a student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, John Hood was a staff writer for the UNC Journalist. He founded his own student magazine, The Carolina Critic, and eventually published six other university campus editions such as The Wake Forest Critic, The State Critic and The UNCC critic.[2][6] He has authored a syndicated column, published twice a week, since 1986; the column is published in newspapers in over 60 North Carolina communities, including the Winston-Salem Journal, Durham Herald-Sun and the Gaston Gazette.[5] From 1986 to 1988, he was a reporter for the Spring Hope Gazette, and from 1988 to 1989 he was a reporter and researcher for the New Republic.[5] Beginning in 1988, he remains a contributing editor with Reason Magazine today.[7] Since 2012, he has been a columnist with Business North Carolina, writing a regular column entitled "Free and Clear."[5]

John Locke Foundation

John Hood helped to found the John Locke Foundation, a Raleigh, N.C.-based conservative think tank, in 1989.[8][9], From February 1990 to June 1995, he was research and publications director for the John Locke Foundation and from June 1995 to December 2014 he served as president of the Foundation. Hood stepped down as president in December 2014; he remains chairman of the board of the Foundation.[2]

Writing and commentary

John Hood is a frequent writer and commenter for print and electronic media. In addition to recurring pieces in Business North Carolina and his twice-weekly syndicated column, he is a contributor to National Review's blog "The Corner". His articles have appeared in print publications such as Reader's Digest, The New Republic, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune. Additionally, he has provided commentary to media outlets such as Fox News, NBC, CNN, CNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post.[2] He is a recurring panelist on NC Spin, a weekly television show focused on North Carolina political and public affairs.[3][4]
