John Houston is a federal judge on senior status on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.[1] He took senior status on February 6, 2018.

Education

Houston graduated from North Carolina A & T State University with his bachelor's degree in 1974 and later graduated from the University of Miami at Coral Gables School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1977.[1]

Military service

Houston has served in the U.S. Army since 1974 as a reservist from 1974 to 1978 and since 1981 along with three years of active duty on the JAG Corps from 1978 to 1981.[1]

Professional career

After military service, Houston joined the U.S. Attorney's Office and spent his legal career as a federal attorney. First, he became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California, from 1981 to 1987, before becoming the Chief Prosecutor of the Asset Forfeiture Unit, from 1987 to 1994, and as Senior counsel for asset forfeiture, from 1994 to 1996. Houston served as the senior financial litigation counsel from 1996 until joining the court in 1998.[1]

Judicial career

Southern District of California

Houston was nominated by George W. Bush on May 1, 2003, to a new judgeship created by 116 Stat. 1758. Houston was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 2, 2003, on a majority voice vote and received commission on October 7, 2003.[1]
