- John Kasich discussed drug policy on November 6, 2015, with Stephen Colbert. He said, “We have a huge drug crisis in this country. ...We don't even want serious drug addicts to be locked in prison for the rest of their life. We treat them, and we pass them off to the community. The problem with marijuana is this: We don't want to tell our kids, 'Don't do drugs, but by the way, this drug's OK.'" Kasich also commented on medical marijuana. He said, "Now, when it comes to medical marijuana, if the experts come back and say we need this for people who have seizures, I'm for that."
- During the third Republican debate, held October 28, 2015, Kasich said he opposed the legalization of marijuana. Kasich said, "Well, first of all, we're running a $2 billion dollar surplus, we're not having a revenue problem right now. And, sending mixed signals to kids about drugs is a disaster. Drugs is one of the greatest scourge in this country, and I spent five years of my administration working with my team to do a whole sort of things to try to reign in the problem of overdoses, and it goes on and on. We could do a whole show on that."[1]
- Kasich stated marijuana legalization was a “terrible idea” during a campaign stop in Michigan on September 1, 2015.[2]
