John Michael Melanson is a former judge on the Idaho Court of Appeals.[1] He was appointed to the court by Republican Governor Butch Otter on August 20, 2009, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Darrel Perry.[2] Melanson took the bench on October 21, 2009, and he retired on June 30, 2017.[3][4]

Remarking on his appointment, Melanson stated: "I am very excited about this appointment and very humbled by the Governor’s decision and I will work every day to live up to the trust he has placed me."[2]

Melanson served as chief judge from 2015 to 2017. He was succeeded as chief judge by David Gratton.


Education

Melanson earned his bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University in 1978 and his J.D. from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1981.[1]

Military service

Melanson is a Vietnam War veteran. He served in the 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970.[2]

Melanson was elected after running unopposed in his first election to the Idaho Court of Appeals in 2012.[5]
