My wife Jennifer and I have lived in Stow since 2000. Our children are proud graduates of Stow-Munroe Falls High School, where I taught for 34 years. My area of focus was government, economics and student leadership. Upon retiring from teaching, I began leadership consulting for area school districts. A certified trainer and coach with Resilient Leadership since 2014, I currently work for five different districts, located mostly in the Northeast Ohio and Central Ohio regions. I assist central office leaders, school boards along with building level leadership be more effective in their roles. I coach leaders how to make decisions based on guiding principles while being curious and connected to various stakeholders, as they collaborate on a preferred future for their school district.
  • Strong Academics: I believe that a rigorous and varied curriculum helps best prepare students for success in our schools as well as life beyond high school. It was my experience that students benefited as much from the process of learning as they did from what they learned. Confidence comes from students doing hard things and experiencing evidence of success. Through high expectations, appropriate and varied student supports along with regular feedback, the best model is for teachers and students to engage in a co-created iterative process of learning. When families consider their educational options, strong academics is consistently a strong consideration.
  • Safe Environment: I believe that students thrive in an environment where they feel safe and valued. Safety includes both physical safety where buildings are secure and safety protocols are consistently followed. Safety also included psychological safety. When students feel valued and cared for, it allows them to think less about their own safety and be more fully invested in their own learning. In my experience at the high school, the mentorship programs along with the Happy organization helps foster a feeling of belonging. When students feel they matter, they can be the best version of themselves. When families consider their educational options, a safe and caring environment is consistently a strong consideration.
  • Our Preferred Future: In my leadership work with schools, I emphasize coherence, consistency and community. Coherence is tied to a common vision for our school district. From board leadership to student and community input, the preferred future is articulated. Each program that is kept, altered, added or discontinued is based on that common vision. Consistency is the fidelity to that vision in the implementation of programs. In spite of challenges, we stay the course, making adjustments as needed. Lastly, making the preferred future a current reality is dependent on a safe environment for students as discussed above. The "3 C's" will be my focus on our school board.
The current model in Ohio for funding public schools is not sustainable. State funding is largely flat as expenses rise. Federal funding sources are increasingly unreliable and likely to be reduced in the future. The consequence of this is more of the financial burden being placed on local taxpayers, which find their rising property taxes a real financial challenge. A restoration of the Fair Funding Plan in real (not nominal) dollars is a good start. That, along with a more efficient use of resources will allow us to realize our preferred future for Stow-Munroe Falls students, families and community.
I believe that an effective elected official prepares thoroughly, listens deeply and makes decisions based on guiding principles, realizing that there are tradeoffs with any tough decision.
I believe that the core responsibilities of a board member includes hiring, supporting and evaluating the Superintendent and Treasurer along with being the conduit between the community and school district leadership. Each of these is done in light of the preferred future of our district.
I would like to be a good steward; to leave our school district in a better place for students, families and our community.
One way to support the diverse needs of our community is to ask them what they need to be successful. Offering suggestions is fine and at times appropriate, but hearing from those who have the need is an effective way to match solution to problem.
Good teaching is involves clear expectations based on framework, necessary supports and regular feedback. This must be offered in an environment of trust and mutual responsibility.
Although quantitative measures of growth are important, the increased focus on test scores has crowded out a more flexible curriculum delivered in a less harried pace. I think this is to our children's detriment.
