Ohio State Bar Association rating
The Ohio State Bar Association's 25-member Commission on Judicial Candidates rates each supreme court candidate as either "not recommended," "recommended," "highly recommended," or "superior." Below are the ratings each 2016 candidate received.
A candidate who is rated "not recommended" received favorable evaluations from less than 60 percent of the commission members. A rating of "recommended" means that the candidate received favorable evaluations from more than 60 percent of the commission members. Those candidates rated "recommended" are subject to a second poll of the commission members; a vote of more than 70 percent of the commission raises that candidate's rating to "highly recommended." Those so rated are subject to a third poll; a vote of more than 80 percent of the commission will raise a "highly recommended" candidate to a rating of "superior."

News from the campaign trail
New perspective for "out of balance" court
Judge O'Donnell says he wants to bring a whole new perspective to a court that is "far out of balance."[11]
“ | We currently have a Supreme Court (in Ohio) with one Democrat and six Republicans. Even people who are heavily partisan should recognize that a court that is that far out of balance is not good in the overall scheme of things.[11][12] | ” |
O'Donnell stated that he is not challenging Justice French for her seat because he finds her "incapable or unqualified."[13] For him, it is about perspective. He said: "I think I'll bring a different perspective than Justice French."[13] O'Donnell cited his extensive trial court experience, as a lawyer and a judge, as the basis for this new perspective.[13][4] He stated again that Justice French "has qualifications - but not [his] qualifications."[14]
Qualifications
O'Donnell has spoken frequently about how his experience in the courtroom, both as a lawyer and a judge, has shaped him to be a better supreme court justice. He said that "recent, heavy-duty, trial-court experience" is necessary to update the perspective of the court.[4] O'Donnell says he is qualified to bring this new perspective to the supreme court, citing his "experience trying felony criminal cases and major commercial lawsuits."[15]
Interestingly and quite unusual for a lower court judge, O'Donnell has authored over 100 court opinions. Judge Philip Mayer of the Richland County Court of Common Pleas has praised Judge O'Donnell for this feat, saying it is "excellent training to one day end up as a Supreme Court judge."[14]
Party politics
O'Donnell, while listed as a Democrat on the ballot, does not want to be pigeonholed into party ideology.
“ | I am not telling you that I am conservative or liberal or moderate. I am telling you...that I have a broad array of experiences that have rendered me I think capable of good service on the court.[15][12] | ” |
He was also appointed to a dedicated docket by former Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer across party lines.
“ | The fact that I was appointed by somebody that’s not in my political party, suggests, I hope, that I can be counted on to be impartial, reasonable, and independent, and not just a shell for one side or the other.[11][12] | ” |
Campaign videos
Judge O'Donnell also sat down with OhioCapitalBlog to discuss the Supreme Court race, his background, and his qualifications for Supreme Court justice.
Strong ballot name
In Ohio, having a "strong ballot name" goes a long way. According to the Ohio Democratic Party, candidates having Irish surnames, as O'Donnell does, are well-liked by Democratic voters. The Ohio Supreme Court bench already has one O'Donnell, an O'Neill, an O'Connor, and a Kennedy.[13]

Approach to the law
“ | A judge should not legislate from the bench but, in the end, that is in the eye of the beholder.[4][12] | ” |
O'Donnell sees the role of a judge as being similar to that of an umpire. The judge "call balls and strikes" thrown by the parties' attorneys.[4]
