John Paul Stevens to retire from Supreme Court
April 9, 2010
Washington, D.C.: Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens announced that he will retire after the court wraps up its 2009-2010 session in June.[1]
Stevens wrote a letter to President Obama alerting his intentions to retire. The decision, according to Stevens, would allow the President time to pick a successor by the time the court opens up the 2010-2011 session in October.[1]
Justice Stevens was nominated by President Gerald Ford to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1975.[1] The Washington Post reported that the front runners to replace Stevens are current U.S. Solictor General Elena Kagan, Seventh Circuit Judge Diane Wood, and DC Circuit Court of Appeals judge Merrick Garland.[1]
