John Power Knowles (1808-1887) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He joined the court in 1869 after a recess appointment from Ulysses Grant. At the time of appointment, he was a private practice attorney in Rhode Island. He retired on March 21, 1881.[1]

Judicial career

Knowles received a recess appointment from President Ulysses Grant on October 9, 1869 and was nominated on December 6, 1869. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 24, 1870, and received commission that same day. He retired on March 21, 1881. Knowles was succeeded in this position by LeBaron Bradford Colt.[1]
