Campaign themes

2015

Roderick's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]
Housing

  • Excerpt: "[W]e have to increase the supply of housing or face ever-increasing rent from constrained supply, as San Francisco has seen. But increasing the number of housing units won’t be enough - we must have smart strategies to make sure we protect existing low income units as well as provide new affordable housing for low and very low income residents."

Public safety

  • Excerpt: "In addition to giving youth at risk of violence access to intensive case management that works, we also need to create jobs directly applicable to them. I would work to expand arts related jobs as well as increase support for the successful Seattle Conservation Corps program. Working to improve our public parks and facilities while receiving valuable training and a city income will invest young people in civic life while instilling pride in themselves and their city."

Broadband

  • Excerpt: "The OTHER flavor of municipal broadband bypasses the private companies completely. In this version, the city runs fiber optic cable right to every business and household—you don’t have to sign up—and we all pay for it with taxes and fees. Broadband internet comes just like power, water and sewer, to everybody."

Police reform

  • Excerpt: "Reform efforts in Seattle need to go beyond simply complying with the Federal consent decree. We must have higher expectations of SPD, centering on reestablishing trust and demonstrating a respect for civil rights and the values of our communities. True dialogue can’t happen without earned trust among all parties. Our civic leaders must demand that the community has a real voice in our reform efforts and that we do a better job of integrating police with the communities they protect."

Transit

  • Excerpt: "Sound Transit is in the process of building a rail system to serve the entire Puget Sound region. Seattle should build our own neighborhood municipal system for the people who live and work in our great city."
