John P. Roemer was a circuit court judge for the Juneau County Circuit Court in Wisconsin who resigned from the court in August 2017.[1] Roemer was killed in a targeted attack on June 3, 2022.[2]

Roemer was elected to the bench in the spring of 2004 after defeating former judge Dennis C. Shuh with 62 percent of the vote. Roemer was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.[3][4][5]

Wisconsin held general elections for local judicial offices on April 5, 2016. A primary election took place on February 16, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was January 5, 2016. Incumbent John Roemer ran unopposed in the Juneau County Circuit Court general election for Branch 1.[5]

The 241 judges of the Wisconsin Circuit Courts are elected in nonpartisan elections to six-year terms. All judges must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving after their term expires.[6]

The chief judge of each circuit court is chosen by the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[6]

Qualifications
To serve on the circuit courts, a judge must be:[6]

  • a qualified elector in the state;
  • a qualified elector of his or her circuit (for circuit judges); and
  • licensed to practice law in the state for at least five years.

2010

Judge Roemer ran for re-election on April 6, 2010. The race was uncontested, with Roemer being elected.[7]

Roemer received a J.D. from Hamline University Law School.[4]

Career

Prior to becoming a judge for the Juneau County Circuit Court, Roemer was a Juneau County assistant district attorney for twelve years. Roemer also worked as an assistant state public defender in Baraboo, Wisconsin. In November 2002, Roemer retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel.[4]
