I'm personally passionate about providing justice for the people that are ignored by society through policies that provide for better schools, building more housing, and expanding job opportunities for those without college degrees.
I'm passionate about addressing health inequalities in The Bronx by reducing car usage, providing more outdoor recreation for children and adults, and making it easier for supermarkets to open that offer fresh food.
I'm passionate about making the 15th District in The Bronx a neighborhood people want to move to, remain in, and raise their families in.
I struggle with these types of questions, but there are certain qualities I admire and find inspiration in: The virtuosity of Stevie Wonder's music, the tenacity of Michael Jordan's basketball career, the fearlessness of Malcolm X, the political genius of LBJ, the passion of a Tupac Shakur verse, the courage of Ida B Wells, and the patience and dedication of every single teacher I ever had.
Teddy Roosevelt's quote is a good summary of my approach to politics: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
I'm not running for office with the goal of solely being re-elected and playing it safe. I want to dare greatly to make my neighborhood, The Bronx, and NYC better places to live.
I remember the 1996 Olympics and Muhammad Ali valiantly carrying the Olympic Torch in Atlanta. I was seven years old, but knew the legend of Ali and what he symbolized to the USA and the entire world.
My first job was as a real estate agent renting apartments in the East and West Village the summer after my freshman year at NYU. I did this job for two summers and it helped me learn downtown Manhattan, the challenges people face when looking for affordable places to live in NYC, and the great disparities of wealth in our city when viewing exorbitant rent costs for small apartments. This experience was invaluable in teaching me communication skills and resilience since I was paid by commission!
I haven't re-read these but influential books in my life include The Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Color of Law, Manchild in The Promise Land, There Are No Children Here, and Master of the Senate. I enjoy books about struggle, perseverance, and books that show the stark reality of injustice often prevailing for a long time before the right people come along and bring forth change.
