What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Education Taxes Healthcare
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am most familiar with education policy, which bleeds into tax policy which impacts issues of healthcare, poverty, addiction etc.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
John Adams...fierce respect for his fellow man, honest to a fault. Obnoxious and disliked at times, you knew where he stood.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Season 1, Episode 1 of Newsroom
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Patient listening. We cannot know everything and we need to be wise enough to know when to seek the understanding of others.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am fairly bright with a wide range of life experiences. It allows me to be empathetic of others. I also have a habit of playing devils advocate to help flesh out the truth of the matter, whatever that happens to be.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
1) Identify problems within segments of society 2) Seek knowledge so as to understand the problems and build coalitions 3)Understand the ramification of any change in policy before changing it.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I helped make New Hampshire a better place to start and grow a business, and start and raise a family.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember Watergate, or parts of it. I was around 5. I remember how upset my family was when Nixon resigned.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I spent summers haying my neighbors hay-fields on their dairy farm from 9-17. From 18-28 I worked in my families John Deere dealership.
What happened on your most awkward date?
My dates mom and dad invited us in to watch this kind of eclectic movie they rented. It had Malcolm McDowell and Peter O'Toole...you might have heard of it...Caligula! We left after about 10 minutes...
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving. For me it is a religious holiday of grace and gratitude. The history is not lost on me. Descended from pilgrims my family has been here almost 400 years. Knowing too that it was a holiday that President Lincoln cemented in place as a healing time after the Civil War makes me think of hope and promise.
What is your favorite book? Why?
Too many to say. I've read Lord of the Rings more than any other book, but not in 30 years. My wife introduced me to Illusions by Richard Bach, a short read, its a great thinking persons "pick-me-up" on a lazy afternoon
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Too difficult to pick just one, mostly because as my mood changes, so does the character. However, Gandalf the White, Donald William Shimoda, Peter Appleton come to mind
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
It is hard to say. I have a few first edition books, or rare family photo's, signed prints etc. I enjoy rarity, unique historic pieces, and if it has a family story to go with it then all the better.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Dobie Gray, Drift Away.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Finding the balance between what I think and believe and representing the rights and beliefs of others. I am quick to cite Voltaire "I might not agree with what you say but will defend with my life your right to say it", but frankly I struggle when what you have to say is just offensive to me.
Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
I see the Senate as being more level headed as each senator represents a much larger swath of the population.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I do. I got involved with the local school board because of local control of education. It opened my eyes as to issues at the state level that hopefully I can affect a positive change on. People who have never seen a budget, made a motion, listened to a constituent I imagine would have a more difficult time jumping in higher up the food chain.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Getting big money out of politics and then balancing the local control vs states rights, the individual against the needs of society.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The governor should set the tone and agenda. Even if neither party controls the legislature and the executive branches, the governor should focus the effort.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
It is critical. As I campaign, I tell everyone that I cannot promise a thing because I am potentially 1 of 400 individuals with various backgrounds, priorities, experiences, and points of view. You cannot get to a majority without relationships.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Redistricting should be non-partisan, and I would push for a fair and neutral third-party to redistrict for the benefit of the state. Democracy is served when all players feel heard.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I have experience in tax policy and education, and went to college for a degree in American Government. If elected, I am here to serve, in whatever capacity I am most needed.
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I would be interested, because I believe myself to be someone who would wield power for the benefit of others. If that ever changes then I need to be voted out.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
Not specifically. I intend to work as long as I am of benefit. If I thought that my work and benefit to the people of NH would require me to run for higher and higher office, I'd consider it. If not then I will just be grateful for the time that the people will me to serve.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
The third door I ever knocked, the man came out and before I could say two words looked at me and said "Are you a democrat or a republican!?" I told him I was running as a democrat. He said "I HATE Democrats!!...BUT I HATE REPUBLICANS MORE!" As comical as that is, his next statement was profound and stuck with me. He said that he would give me an opportunity to change direction, but frankly, he considered both parties to be corrupt. I got one shot with this man, and I think most people to treat them and their vote with a certain reverence and respect...Not to make everyone happy with every minuscule detail, but instead to be generally well meaning and good hearted, making the lives of the people we serve a little better than we found them.
