John Sweeney ran for election to the Portland City Council to represent District 3 in Oregon. He lost in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Biography

Sweeney earned an A.S. in management from Portland Community College in 1978. His professional experience includes working as a consultant at Sweeney, Smiths, and Jones since 1998, as a freelance writer, as a supervisor at Portland Parks and Public Recreation from 1965 to 1997 and as a director at the Multnomah Education Service District from 1979 to 1987. He served as a Captain in the United States Army Reserve/Oregon Army National Guard from 1956 to 1985. Sweeney and his wife, Lynn, have one child.[1]

Elections for the Oregon State Senate took place in 2016. The primary election took place on May 17, 2016, and the general election was held on November 8, 2016. The candidate filing deadline was March 8, 2016. Incumbent Diane Rosenbaum (D) did not seek re-election.

Kathleen Taylor defeated James Ofsink and Josh Howard in the Oregon State Senate District 21 general election.[2][3]

Four of the seven seats on the Portland Board of Education were up for general election on May 19, 2015. The seats of Zone 1 incumbent Ruth Adkins, Zone 2 incumbent Matt Morton, Zone 3 incumbent Bobbie Regan and Zone 7 incumbent Greg Belisle were up for election.

Regan was the only incumbent to file to seek re-election. He faced three challengers, Amy Carlsen Kohnstamm, Gretchen Hollands and Wes Soderback, and was defeated by Kohnstamm.

Julie Esparza Brown defeated Andrew Davidson in the race for the open Zone 1 seat. Four candidates—Paul Anthony, José González, Emma Russac Williams and John Sweeney—filed for the open Zone 2 race. Anthony was successful in that race. Mike Rosen won the open Zone 7 seat unopposed.

Sweeney provided the following statement for the Multnomah County voter's pamphlet:

“ High School:

We must stress to our students that finishing high school is thekey to thier future.

To make the “School Experience” worthwhile. We must make classes moreinteresting,most students do not drop out because they can not do the work. They drop out because they are bored out of thier minds. Thier future is also our future.

Election of Directors:

At present candidates for DIRECTOR MUST LIVE IN THE ZONE.

But, must run for Director, district wide.

We must change this to to living in the zone and being elected from the zone. This would better represent the zone and greatly reduce the cost of the election.[12]
