John T. Fowlkes Jr. is a judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. He joined the court in 2012 after an appointment from President Barack Obama (D).[1]

At the time of his appointment, Fowlkes was a judge on the Shelby County Criminal Court in the Thirtieth Judicial District of Tennessee. He was appointed to this position by Gov. Phil Bredesen (D) on August 24, 2007. He was then elected on August 7, 2008, to a full term.[2][3][4]

Early life and education

A native of Washington, D.C., Fowlkes received his bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in 1975 and his J.D. from the University of Denver in 1977.[5]

On December 16, 2011, President Barack Obama (D) nominated Fowlkes to serve on the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee to fill the seat vacated by Bernice Donald.[4][6] The American Bar Association rated Fowlkes Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Fowlkes' nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 14, 2012, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on April 19, 2012. Fowlkes was confirmed on a recorded 94-2 vote of the U.S. Senate on July 10, 2012, and he received his commission on August 1, 2012.[1][7][8]
