John T. Simpson is a judge of the Coweta Circuit of the 6th Superior Court District of Georgia. He was elected to the bench in 1996 and began on January 1, 1997. Simpson won re-election in the nonpartisan general election on May 24, 2016.

Before Simpson was elected to the superior court, he was a Democratic member of the Georgia House of Representatives. He was elected to his 70th District seat in Carroll and Douglas counties in 1986 and left in 1997 when he became a judge. While a state representative, Simpson was a member of the Education committee, the Judiciary committee and the Health and Ecology committee. In addition, Simpson has worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, as an attorney in private practice, as an intern in the Georgia State Senate and as a law clerk for Judge Joseph C. Jackson.[1][2]

Biography

Simpson received his A.B. in political science from West Georgia College and his J.D. from Mercer University. He earned a certificate of general jurisdiction trial skills from the National Judicial College.[3][4][1]

Georgia held elections for local judicial offices—some of which are partisan, others of which are nonpartisan—in 2016. On May 24, 2016, regions across the state held primaries for the partisan races and general elections for the nonpartisan races. Runoff races for both the partisan primaries and the nonpartisan general elections were held on July 26, 2016. The general election for partisan races took place on November 8, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was March 11, 2016.[5]

Incumbent John T. Simpson ran unopposed in the general election for one of 12 seats up for election on the 6th District of the Georgia Superior Court.

Selection method

There are 202 judges on the Georgia Superior Courts, each chosen by the people in nonpartisan elections to serve a four-year term.

The process for selecting a chief judge and that chief judge's term varies by circuit.[6]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:

  • a state resident for three years;
  • a resident of the circuit he or she is representing;
  • admitted to practice law for at least seven years; and
  • at least 30 years old.

Simpson ran unopposed for re-election to the Coweta Circuit. He was re-elected after receiving 99.8 percent of the vote on July 31, 2012.[7][8]
