John Warner (Montana)

John Warner is a former associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court, a position to which he was appointed in May of 2003 by then-governor Judy Martz, a Republican.[1] He was retained by voters in 2004[2] and 2006[3] and his current term would expire in 2014. However, Warner retired on December 31, 2009, citing health reasons.[4][5]

Education

Justice Warner was born on January 22, 1943. A native of Great Falls, Montana, he graduated from high school in Great Falls and earned a B.A. degree in history and political science from Montana State University, Missoula, in 1965. Justice Warner earned his J.D. degree from the University of Montana School of Law in 1967.[1]

Career

Justice Warner began his legal career in 1967 as a law clerk for the Montana Supreme Court. One year later, he began practicing law in Havre, Montana. He worked in this capacity for 20 years and specialized in litigation. He has also worked as the chairman of the Supreme Court Commission on Uniform District Court Rules, was a trustee and president of the State Bar of Montana, and was a Havre City Attorney. He was elected District Judge of the 12th Judicial District in 1988, 1994 and 2000. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in May of 2003 by Republican Gov. Judy Martz.[1][4]
