John Witzel
John Witzel was a member of the Nebraska State Board of Education, representing District 4. Witzel assumed office in 2014. Witzel left office on January 7, 2021.
Witzel ran for election to the Educational Service Unit No. 3 Board to represent District 4. Witzel lost in the general election on November 3, 2020.
Biography
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Witzel retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel after 22 years of service. His final posing was at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska as director of the Strategic Air Command Airborne Command Post. Witzel went on to work as an accountant, author, and defense consultant. Prior to his appointment to the state board, Witzel had spent 14 years on the board of education for Educational Service Unit 3. Witzel holds degrees from Louisiana Tech, Ball State University, and Bellevue University.[1]
Political career
Nebraska State Board of Education (2014-2021)
Witzel was first appointed to the board to fill a vacancy by Gov. Dave Heineman (R) in 2014. He was elected to a full term in 2016. On January 6, 2017, Witzel was elected to a one-year term as the board's vice president.[2] He served as the board's president during the 2019–2020 session. Witzel did not file for re-election to the seat in 2020.
