I am a Marriage and Family Therapist and a third-generation Angeleno. I have worked as a therapist in both sliding scale clinics in North Hollywood, as well as in community mental health agencies providing services to lower socio-economic youth in East Los Angeles and El Sereno. As a small business owner, I operate a private practice that offers mental health services. My decision to run for office stems from my belief that Los Angeles will benefit from leadership that considers the mental health impact in all aspects of the city.
  • Everyone is safer when everyone has a roof. Los Angeles faces a severe shortage of housing, some of the highest rents in the nation, and one of the lowest vacancy rates. Affording housing and saving money should not be considered a luxury. For those who are unhoused, a roof and rehabilitative services offer a second chance at life. It is imperative that we rezone our commercial corridors for mixed use and prioritize keeping people in their housing. The city must increase the supply of supportive housing, social housing and community land trusts.
  • Everyone is healthier when we take care of our environment. Urban Forestry is key to our success, and I am committed to increasing the tree canopy in District 2 by at least 1000 trees per year. Investment in LA100 projects, to transition LA to 100% renewables by 2035, need to be a priority. Promote learning opportunities and technical trade training for green jobs in solar and other renewables. EV and rail public transit are crucial in reducing our carbon footprint and reducing climate anxiety in Los Angeles. Together we can build a green future in LA as a standard for the country.
  • Our city council is responsible for aspects of our quality of life. Often the mental health impact of streetlights, broken sidewalks, traffic, and public transit go unspoken. These are issues that when unattended have tremendous impacts on us. When streetlights are out, neighborhoods may feel less safe. For those who are elderly or have mobility challenges, a broken sidewalk poses a danger and may lead to isolation and depression. Gridlocked traffic has been correlated with domestic violence, impacting mental health across generations. Quality public transit is a means of reducing stress when navigating a city. These are a few of the issues that, when looked at through the lens of mental health, offer opportunities to improve our lives.
I am most passionate about funding unarmed crisis response to be on par with the resources allocated to LAFD and LAPD. This will provide more rehabilitative services to our communities while allowing LAFD and LAPD to focus on specialized tasks. I support the utilization of a Public Bank to better steward our funds for public works projects. Some estimates forecast the city could save 1.3 billion in fees and interest by making the switch. Lastly, I believe that mental health treatment and resources should be part of the job of law enforcement and being a first responder. These are careers that almost by definition include traumatic experiences. Let's end the stigma by making mental health not only an option but a something that is rewarded with career advancement.
