Campaign themes
2014
Applebaum's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Education
- Excerpt: "Minnesota should be the national leader in education. Our students, teachers and faculty all must be put in the best position to succeed. This is accomplished through ample state funding and promotion of the latest technological tools and innovative teaching methods to ensure that our students are ready for their future. I will support investment in education in accordance with these beliefs."
Jobs/Economy
- Excerpt: "The government’s role should be to encourage economic growth, which requires strong support of the business community. From workers being able to earn a livable wage, to encouraging companies to hire and expand locally and reinvest in our community, to providing entrepreneurs and small business owners with the opportunity to thrive, the government must create economic opportunities for everyone. Promoting our business community is a necessity for returning to economic prosperity."
Taxes
- Excerpt: "The government’s tax structure should be based on fair and equitable principles designed to promote economic growth and full employment, while being capable of funding our state’s vital programs. I will advocate for reform that will eliminate inequitable loopholes, stabilize our revenues and provide tax incentives for investment into local businesses."
Government Reform
- Excerpt: "Our government should adapt to the ever-changing world and utilize all technological advancements for the most effective delivery of its services. Constituents must be able to reach government resources at their fingertips and red tape cannot delay timely decision-making and results. We must carefully monitor spending, reduce waste and employ creative solutions to make the government work better for everyone."
Transportation
- Excerpt: "A robust transportation system is essential for our community to prosper. In the short term, we must maintain the very safest roads and provide for most efficient measures for traveling by advancing innovative ideas and employing the latest technology for reducing traffic. In the long term, I believe our community will be best served by multi-modal transportation and would support a cost-effective development of the Southwest Light Rail Transit."

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
