Judge rules that Missouri governor has authority to appoint lieutenant governor

On July 11, 2018, Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem ruled that Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) had the authority to appoint a lieutenant governor. The judge dismissed a case brought by the Missouri Democratic Party in June 2018 after Parson appointed former state Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kehoe (R) as lieutenant governor. The Missouri Democratic Party argued that the lieutenant governor vacancy should be filled only by election and asked the court to nullify Kehoe's appointment.

Emily Waggoner, the Missouri Democratic Party's executive director, said the group was considering an appeal. "We strongly believe that Missourians deserve the opportunity to vote for their Lieutenant Governor," she said. Gov. Parson said Judge Beetem's decision affirmed his position and that of previous governors from both parties. Lt. Gov. Kehoe said, "I am grateful for, and agree with, Judge Beetem's ruling."[3][4]
