Jon Patterson (Republican Party) is a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, representing District 30. He assumed office in 2019. His current term ends on January 6, 2027.
Patterson (Republican Party) is running for election to the Missouri State Senate to represent District 8. He declared candidacy for the 2026 election.[source]
On January 8, 2025, the Missouri House of Representatives voted 152-10 to elect Patterson speaker of the House.[1] From 2023 to 2024, Patterson served as House majority leader.
Patterson was born in Blue Springs, Missouri.[2] Patterson graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with a bachelor's degree in biology in 2002 and a medical degree in 2006.[2] Patterson completed his surgical residency in Kansas City after graduating, and worked as a surgeon in Jackson County from 2011 to 2022.[3]
Patterson entered politics in 2018 when he ran in the Republican primary for Missouri House of Representatives District 30, defeating two other candidates. Patterson defeated Democrat Ryana Parks-Shaw 52-46% in the general election. As a freshman lawmaker, Patterson said, "My first impressions are that every single member of the House, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats are here for the right reasons."[4]
Patterson was re-elected in 2020, 2022, and 2024. In his 2024 re-election campaign, Patterson said his priorities included "Fairness for citizens' property taxes in Jackson County," "Improving roads and bridges," and "Supporting public schools."[5]
Patterson defeated Rep. Justin Sparks (R) in January 2025 to become the first Asian American House speaker in Missouri history.[6] Sparks said he ran for the speakership over disagreements with Patterson over how to address Amendment 3, the 2024 measure that added language supporting "a fundamental right to reproductive freedom" to the Missouri Constitution. In the weeks leading up the vote, Patterson said that while he didn't support Measure 3, if it passed, "it will be the law of the land. And we have to go forward as the people decide."[7] Sparks responded, "That’s not what the leader of the Republican caucus should be saying, guys. On day one, your speaker must address and tackle Amendment 3."[6] Patterson later said that "While we respect the will of the voters, we must clarify the provisions of Amendment 3 and make Missouri the most pro-life state it can be."[1]
The 152 votes Patterson received from the House included Democratic votes. House Minority Leader Ashley Aune (D) supported Patterson's bid, saying "We work very well together, and while I haven’t been given explicit assurances, what I will say is I do trust him to be fair and to listen to me and to my caucus members when we have an issue.[1]
