Four seats on the Escondido Union High School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Two incumbents, Tina Pope from Trustee Area 1 and Christi Knight from Trustee Area 3, ran unopposed and won re-election by default. No incumbent filed to run in the Trustee Area 2 election, leaving the race to candidates Lou Barrios and Bill Durney. Durney defeated Barrios and won election to the seat. In Trustee Area 5, incumbent Jon Petersen ran against challenger Georgine Tomasi and won re-election.

Elections for Trustee Areas 1, 2 and 5 were canceled due to lack of opposition. Incumbents Tina Pope, Jon Petersen and Randy Garcia were re-elected by default.[1]

Petersen highlighted the following priorities on his campaign website:

I. Hold high expectations for and improve the academic achievement of all students within the Escondido Union High School District.
1. Provide a system of instructional alignment, integrating standards, curriculum, instructional practices, and assessment.
2. Provide all students with guaranteed and intentional guidance in academics, career, and personal development.
3. Enhance the College and Career Ready Culture on each campus (e.g., MAP program, AVID, Gear Up).
4. Implement a variety of programs in the Learning Centers to include both acceleration and intervention.

II. Provide a highly skilled, caring, and committed staff that collaborates to positively support instruction and learning.

1. Provide resources and professional development to nurture our Professional Learning Communities.
2. Provide targeted professional development to teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, and administrators to support students in meeting academic goals.

III. Provide appropriate educational facilities that create an environment supportive of teaching and learning in a safe setting.

1. Provide optimal learning environments for all students through the Long Range Facilities Master Plan.

IV. Promote community connections through effective communication and partnerships and opportunities for community input.

1. Implement the communications plan for 2014-15.
2. Maintain a customer-service philosophy throughout the district.
3. Continue meaningful articulation with the elementary district.
4. Optimize parent education and involvement to support students in meeting achievement goals.

V. Support organizational alignment that maximizes student academic success.

1. Continue to implement new student information system, Synergy.
2. Continue to focus on implementing the Energy Conservation Initiative.
3. Maintain a balanced and fiscally responsible operating budget.
4. Provide "position control" structure to ensure accuracy of the budget process system.
5. Ensure that the District Technology Use Plan is one-hundred percent aligned to support academic initiatives.
6. Assist the foundation to raise scholarship funds for students in the MAP program.
7. Continue to develop the instructional program for Del Lago Academy, our new magnet school dedicated to the sciences.[2]
