Jon Ralston is a political print and broadcast journalist based in Las Vegas, Nev. He has covered Nevada state politics for over 30 years, and in 2012, Politico placed Ralston in its "50 politicos to watch: Swing-state media players" list.[1] Ralston's experience includes working as a reporter, blogger, columnist, television news host, and founder of the Nevada Independent.[2]
Biography
Ralston grew up in Buffalo, New York and attended Cornell University in 1981, where he earned a bachelor's degree in english. He also earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Michigan in 1983.[2]
After graduating, Ralston worked as the night police reporter then political reporter for Las Vegas Review Journal. He became a full time political columnist in 1989 and throughout the 1990s he freelanced for Las Vegas Review Journal and provided commentary for news Channel 8.[3]
In 1993, Ralston began producing a statewide political newsletter for Nevada readers called The Ralston Report, and three years later the Las Vegas Business Press mentioned him as part of its list of Clark County's "Top 40 Under 40." In 1998, The Ralston Report became a daily newsletter sent to subscribers by email, and Greenspun Media Group purchased the publication a year later.[2][3]
Ralston published a book about Nevada state politics called The Anointed One in 2000 and received his first "Best Non-Staff Columnist" award from Nevada State Press Association that same year. He won again in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011. He won a national award in 2009, when the Associated Press News Executive Council recognized him for best local column.[2][3]
Ralston produces an email newsletter called "Flash" and hosted the television shows "Ralston Live" and "Ralston Reports". He published columns for The Las Vegas Sun and Reno Gazette-Journal until his departure to found The Nevada Independent in 2016.[2]

The Nevada Independent
Ralston is the founder and chief executive officer of the Nevada Independent. He wrote announcing the Independent in January 2017, "We aim to be different. This will not be a monologue but a dialogue. We want your suggestions and criticisms. We will invite rebuttals and op-eds. We will take interacting with and among readers to new levels, with innovative approaches we will unveil soon. We will host town halls, forums, and debates. This is your state. This will be your news source – and your voice."[4]
