Jonatan Zuñiga was a candidate for District 6 representative on the Milwaukee Public Schools school board in Wisconsin. Zuñiga was defeated in the by-district general election on April 4, 2017.

Zuñiga is a graduate of Milwaukee Public Schools. He earned a bachelor's degree in urban studies and business administration from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. He is the community outreach manager for the Layton Boulevard West Neighbors. He is a member of La Luz del Mundo Church.[1]

Four of the nine seats on the Milwaukee Public Schools Board of School Directors were up for general election on April 4, 2017. In her bid for re-election to District 4, incumbent Annie Woodward defeated challenger Aisha Carr. In District 5, incumbent Larry Miller defeated challenger Kahri Phelps Okoro. District 6 incumbent Tatiana Joseph and District 7 incumbent Claire Zautke did not file to run for re-election, leaving both seats open for newcomers. Tony Baez and Jonatan Zuñiga ran for the District 6 seat, and Joey Balistreri and Paula Phillips ran for the District 7 seat. Baez and Phillips won election to the board.[2][3]

Zuñiga reported $8,832.40 in contributions and $8,574.42 in expenditures to the City of Milwaukee Election Commission, which left his campaign with $257.98 on hand in the election.[4]

Zuñiga highlighted the following priorities on his campaign website:

  • Young people must be more involved in the civic and political life of our community
  • Parents must be respected for their choices and engaged at their schools
  • Schools must be community centers of excellence and safe havens in our neighborhoods
  • Partnerships among schools, businesses and our non-profit organizations must be focused, improved, and expanded
  • Madison legislators must treat Milwaukee fairly
  • Students must know that 'it’s cool to be smart,' and that all their gifts are valued
  • Great teachers must be encouraged, supported and celebrated
  • Our political leaders—beginning with the Directors on the Milwaukee Schools Board--should be bringing us together, not driving us apart
  • Milwaukee must become a destination city for skilled workers and dedicated professionals
  • A new generation of leaders must emerge to lead us forward[5]
