Jonathan Daly-LaBelle has been engaged in community organizing and activism for over 20 years and has a couple of successful political campaigns to his credit, serving as a school committee member in South Kingstown from 2012 to 2016.
  • A significant part of the reason I am running for State Rep is that Westerly generally has a record of being a “lean blue” community. Voters in District 37 should have the choice of voting for a candidate who may be more inline with their values. The incumbent has a voting record of being anti-choice, opposing many common sense gun regulations, supporting many gun use expansions, was primary sponsor of legislation in 2023 that amounted to a book ban, and strongly opposed legislation that would have replaced the out-dated, only state in the nation to celebrate, Victory (over Japan) Day with Peace and Remembrance Day.
  • Jonathan is pro-choice, in favor of reasonable gun regulations, prioritizes LGBTQ rights as human rights, and sees the issues of housing and health care through a prism of human rights. “During these very uncertain times, and a crucially important presidential election looming, it makes sense for voters, and community members in general, to consider how their state legislators stack up on all these issues. It makes a difference now, and maybe even more so in the coming years.”
  • We need more office holders who prioritize issues of social, racial, economic, and climate justice. While there are limitations to what any one person can get done, it is my hope to be a small cog on lifting up issues of housing, health care, education, climate, social services, voting rights, better wages and worker protections.
For the last seven years, Daly-LaBelle’s civic engagement has been primarily centered on issues of peace and anti-militarism. One entity, No Endless War or Excessive Militarism, is a street level effort that builds awareness by calling to RI’s congressional members toward economic conversion, to fund and create jobs to address the climate crisis and in fields of human need, achieved in part by reducing military spending, and away from fueling war, the nuclear) arms race, and a burgeoning militaristic society.
While I have been politically active for 20+ years, my system of beliefs and values deepened during and after the years of the Great Recession in 2008/2009. I greatly align with Bernie Sanders advocacy and platform.
It is important for an elected official to be accessible to their constituents, and to conduct themselves in as honest and transparent ways as is possible.
My first job was delivering newspapers for the Brockton Enterprise. By memory, I believe I had that job for 2 years or so, starting when I was 12 and until my family moved to a rural community in Massachusetts.

It taught me a lot about responsibility, work ethic, keeping a schedule, keep track of finances, interactions with adults, customer service, and life in general. One sees the world differently at the street level, walking or biking along.
Curbing the cost of housing and rents, protecting that the working and lower economic classes are able to maintain living and enjoying this beautiful state. Also, meeting and building upon the goals of the Act on Climate. The people of RI are particularly vulnerable to the negative impacts of the burgeoning climate crisis.
