Jonathan Finer was the deputy national security advisor in the Biden administration. In the Obama administration, he was the chief of staff and director of policy planning at the U.S. Department of State and a White House fellow.
Prior to entering government service, Finer was a foreign and national correspondent for The Washington Post.[1]
Biography
Finer graduated from Harvard University before earning his M.Phil in international relations at Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar. He also received a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he co-founded the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project.[1]
Finer was a foreign and national correspondent for The Washington Post, covering the war in Iraq and conflicts in Israel and Lebanon in 2006, Russia and Georgia in 2008, and Gaza in 2009. He became a White House fellow in 2009, working in the Office of the White House Chief of Staff and National Security Council Staff.[1]
During the Obama administration, he also worked as a senior advisor to Tony Blinken, then a deputy national security advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, and a foreign policy speechwriter for then-Vice President Joe Biden (D).[1]
In 2015, Finer became the chief of staff and director of policy planning at the U.S. Department of State.[1]
Following his time in the Obama administration, Finer became the head of political risk and public policy at Warburg Pincus LLC.[2]
