The following is Merritt's biography as it appears on his campaign website:

"At the age of 21, Jonathan pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. Over his career Jonathan worked his way up through the ranks of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office to the rank of Detective Sergeant in the Investigations Division. Jonathan worked tirelessly in the investigation, apprehension, and conviction of some of North Carolinas most dangerous criminals throughout his career.

In 2010 Jonathan and his wife Mary were blessed with the birth of his son Collin which led Jonathan to leave the law enforcement profession in 2012 for a more stable work schedule and family life.

Jonathan returned to the transportation industry as the maintenance supervisor for G & P Trucking Company in Garysburg, NC. Jonathan was in charge of the inspection, maintenance, and repair of 27 power units and 400+ trailers in their dedicated division. In 2014 Jonathan took the position of Lead Instructor for Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technology at James Sprunt Community College and the challenge of developing a brand new program. He has the experience of utilizing Golden Leaf and NC Tobacco Trust Funding, building construction, and curriculum building through his experience with JSCC. ​ Throughout his diverse career Jonathan has seen intimately the results of an undereducated workforce and its effect on the community. These experiences are what Jonathan will use to ensure that every graduate of Onslow County Schools is College or Career Ready."[1]

Four of the seven seats on the Onslow County Schools school board were up for general election on March 15, 2016. Three candidates—Gene Flanagan, Jonathan Merritt and Dawnna Turner—challenged incumbents Earl Taylor, Pamela Thomas and Paul Wiggins in their re-election bids.[2] All incumbents secured re-election and were joined in their victory by a single newcomer: Jonathan Merritt.

Funding

Merritt reported a total of $5,200.11 in contributions and $4,319.02 in expenditures to the Onslow County Board of Elections, leaving his campaign with $881.09 on hand as of March 22, 2016.[3]

School board candidates in North Carolina are required to file campaign finance reports to their county's board of elections unless the candidate:

(1) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in contributions, and

(2) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in loans, and

(3) Does not spend more than one thousand dollars ($1,000).[4]
