Alderman Jonathon Hansen is a candidate for Wisconsin's 30th Senate District, seeking to replace his uncle, Sen. Dave Hansen. Born and raised in Northeast Wisconsin, Jonathon comes from a working-class family, with a father who worked at a meat processing plant in Green Bay. He helped his father deliver newspapers as a kid, began working at a grocery store in high school, and worked in the retail industry to help pay his way through college. Since 2017, Jonathon has served on De Pere's City Council. He has fought to promote small businesses through an improved facade grant program, which in turn created new investments in De Pere's downtown, led a community effort to pass a referendum to replace an aging pool in his district, and worked closely with elected officials from all partisan affiliations to promote important infrastructure projects. Prior to dedicatedly serving in local government, Jonathon graduated in 2012 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a Bachelor's Degree in English and Political Science. He continued his education at Marquette University, earning a Master's Degree in 2016, while also teaching undergraduate courses on campus. He went on to manage Sen. Dave Hansen's successful reelection campaign in 2016.
  • Ending gerrymandering: The Wisconsin Legislature district maps are being redrawn in 2021, and I will introduce legislation to create a nonpartisan redistricting process. Most legislative districts are currently not competitive, and legislators are often only concerned with appealing to their narrow political bases. By creating more competitive districts, we will be able to promote more moderation and bipartisanship in state government.
  • Fighting for tougher environmental policy: When elected, I plan to introduce policies that hold polluters accountable and protect our environment. Throughout the district, access to clean drinking water has been severely limited. I will fight to clean up water contamination from dangerous chemicals, lead pipes, and agricultural runoff so that all Wisconsin residents can have access to clean drinking water.
  • Promoting state and local economic development: Protecting small businesses and family farms are crucial to a thriving local economy. One of my top priorities will be creating good-paying jobs right here in Northeast Wisconsin. The engine of this job creation should be small businesses. Rather than giving $4 billion to a foreign corporation, like Foxconn, with a long history of breaking promises, we should be directing state economic development assistance to invest in locally-owned businesses, startup companies, and family farms. I also support policies that will ban taxpayer dollars from going to companies that ship jobs out of Wisconsin, and require American-made materials to be used in all state construction projects.
If elected, I will support legislation that will fund our public schools and reinvest in teachers and education, including restoring the state's commitment to funding 2/3 of K-12 school costs, expanding mental health services in schools, and creating incentives-such as a student loan forgiveness program-for teachers who accept jobs in high-need urban and rural school districts. I strongly believe that every Wisconsinite should have access to comprehensive and affordable healthcare. We should immediately accept the Medicaid expansion funds, and also provide a BadgerCare public option for those who lack affordable health insurance.

Wisconsin is rated as one of the highest states for racial disparity and inequality. We need to listen to the experiences of the communities who are affected by racial injustice and engage in meaningful dialogue to guide policymaking at the local and state level. I will also fight to create economic opportunities for all by raising the minimum wage, breaking down barriers to receiving a high-quality education, and prioritizing rehabilitation services over excessive jail sentences in order to reduce recidivism rates.

Finally, I will work to restore civility and a willingness to compromise to our state politics. The past decade has seen too much partisan gridlock. I will work closely with lawmakers from both parties to identify issues that we can find common ground on, and then pursue bipartisan solutions. We need to once again focus on what unites
