I'm a software product development and support engineer for nearly 40 years with a Master of Science degree from Northwestern University, a Chicagolander, raised conservative, looking to promote responsible government that respects the American ideals of freedom and self-sufficiency. I'm married to Robin for 18 years, and we live in the northwest corner of Chicago, but we've enjoyed visiting all 50 states and several countries in Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand.
  • My goal in Springfield is to push the Illinois Senate to do what's best for the average Illinoisan, in particular to reduce gas taxes and increase energy production to reduce inflation.
  • Another top priority is to support law enforcement and the prosecution of criminal activity with deterrent sentences; and to repeal the SAFE-T Act in particular.
  • A fundamental priority is to support and encourage the integrity and autonomy of families, ensuring parental rights and the responsibility to raise responsible children.
So much of public discussion in the last few years has become completely irrational, from bullying with unproven assertions to rejecting long-established principles of common sense, like fairly hearing all sides of an issue, or the inference of dishonesty from refusal to provide evidence supporting a position, or the unreliability of hearsay. I believe it's crucial to our survival that freedom of speech, movement, assembly, etc. be legally ensured, but that citizens be able to judge the rationality of claims for themselves.
My professional career has been built on analytical thinking, attention to detail, commitment and persistence, as well as thoughtful expression of views, all of which I think would be beneficial to a legislative position.
In the Illinois Senate, I believe the responsibility of each Senator is to carefully weigh proposed actions in light of the best interests of all in that Senator's district, but also considering the best interests of the whole state. Senators should also monitor the actions of the Governor and state offices to ensure that the intent of existing laws is being followed, or to propose changes to those laws. It's also important to understand the priorities and motivations of others to build consensus toward responsible lawmaking.
Yes and no. I think the mechanics of the legislature are so arcane that some experience is helpful, but that experience needs to be spread more broadly through the electorate and not concentrated in a few careerists. I would be in favor of a system of term limits, perhaps with a maximum of 8 consecutive years in office followed by at least 4 years out of office.
Yes, I think it's important to develop more than superficial relationships with other legislators, in order to know in more detail their priorities and motivations, and to enable building consensus.
Yes, the nature of a true emergency requires quick and decisive response by the governor, but the initial declaration should be subject to legislative review, and it should take a supermajority of the legislature to extend the authorization beyond the initial few weeks.
