Campaign themes

2016

A profile of Charette by Vote411.org highlighted the following issues:[1]

State budgets and fiscal policy

  • Excerpt: "Legislators must take a hard look at contracts that have been put in place whereby Oklahoma is contributing millions of dollars in salary funding to privately owned corporations, and seek every avenue available to reduce frivolous expenditures. I am certain that there are a great many areas in which our state government could be streamlined and made more efficient, and that with input from our State Auditor, we can and must reduce overspending and inefficiencies."

Education

  • Excerpt: "Taking a stance to reduce the multiple layers of school administration would make needed funds available at the teacher / student levels and allow us to provide a much higher quality of education to our state’s students."
  • Excerpt: "There is nothing in the Constitution which delegated authority to the federal government over public education in the various states. Other states have already ceased receipt of federal funding, after performing audits only to find that the cost of administration of those funds exceeded the actual funds received. I would propose and support legislation that would place emphasis on education itself (reading, writing, language skills, arithmetic, accurate history, arts) – never on 'indoctrination' of our young people."

Incarceration

  • Excerpt: "With so many households not having an at-home parent, encouraging communities to develop after-school programs is an area that could have a huge impact in the long term. If we encourage senior citizens to become involved, have churches utilize fellowship halls or gymnasiums, get others in communities to donate time and/or resources, we could, I believe, provide a better environment for our youth than an empty house with no supervision.
  • Excerpt: "Legislatively speaking, if we require stiffer sentences for particular crimes, this could actually BE a deterrent. Conversely, if we currently have sentences that are much stricter than they should be for minor crimes, then those could possibly be lightened or modified by developing and utilizing work / serve programs. In some cases, community service might provide a much better option than simply incarcerating individuals."
