An effort to recall Joni Wines from her position as sheriff of Nye County, Nevada was launched. Wines was the first woman to be elected as sheriff in the state. After a rash of crime in the county, including a war between two competing brothel owners, a recall campaign was launched against Wines. She was successfully recalled on February 5, 1980 by a vote of 1,228 to 979.[1][2]

Approximately 1,119 signatures were submitted, significantly more than the requsite 300 valid signatures, were submitted in order to force the recall effort to a vote.[3]
