On March 22, 2018, Reynolds ordered Gov. Scott Walker (R) to schedule special elections to fill two vacant seats in the Wisconsin legislature. State Sen. Frank Lasee (R) and Rep. Keith Ripp (R) both resigned their seats to take positions in Walker's administration on December 29, 2017. Under state law, the governor must call for a special election if the vacancy occurs before the second Tuesday in May of an election year. Walker had argued that the vacancies left by Lasee and Ripp did not fall within the law's requirements because they took place in 2017, not 2018 (2018 is an election year). Judge Reynolds disagreed. Reynolds held that the law requires a special election for all vacancies that occur before the second Tuesday in May of an election year, according to The Washington Post. Reynolds ordered Walker to call for the elections by March 29 and schedule them within 11 weeks.[4] | |
