Campaign themes

2017

Lopez's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

Education

  • Excerpt: "City Hall budgeting imposes constraints that prevent too many administrators, teachers and parents from creating schools that can attract families and serve children optimally. Despite extensive research emphasizing the importance of early childhood education, Boston is a city where PRE-SCHOOL remains a mere aspiration or "lucky draw" rather than a right."

Housing

  • Excerpt: "Among many residents who wish to raise families in communities that they know and love, Lopez and his wife, friends and colleagues devote much thought and effort to removing barriers to affordable rental housing and homeownership opportunities."

Veterans

  • Excerpt: "With approximately 74% of our veterans aged over 55, we must ensure we are taking their needs and dreams into consideration as we move forward."

Healthcare

  • Excerpt: "Councilor Lopez will work proactively with leaders and experts from Boston's healthcare sector to better anticipate and defend the needs and services of our most vulnerable neighbors at this very uncertain time."

Economic opportunity

  • Excerpt: "Instead of the exclusion and mounting displacement that we now witness daily, the economic 'renewal' and 'growth' of D7 must prioritize and reward the ample energy, skills, talents and dreams of the district's own domestic supply of workers, business-owners, entrepreneurs and others -- including patrons and consumers who also prefer to buy and spend 'local'."

Environment

  • Excerpt: "Our campaign will support local and regional efforts in preserving our environmental resources while we continue to develop our city in ways that mitigate our footprint."

Community policing

  • Excerpt: "Increasing the current number of BPD patrolmen on bikes and on foot in D7, and creating a Community Affairs Bureau within the BPD, are two very meaningful and cost-effective measures that would not only send a positive signal, but create valuable "new space" for strengthening police-community relations and addressing crime."

Criminal justice

  • Excerpt: "Our current bail system is not fair to low income defendants and families who do not have access to large sums of cash, and who, unable to post bail, are cut off from their lives before being found innocent or guilty of a crime."
