Joseph Birkett
Joseph Birkett is a judge of the Illinois 2nd District Appellate Court. He assumed office in 2010. His current term ends on December 6, 2032.
Birkett ran for re-election for judge of the Illinois 2nd District Appellate Court. He won in the retention election on November 8, 2022.
Education
Birkett received his B.A. degree (in political science and English) from North Central College in 1977 and his J.D. degree from the John Marshall Law School in 1981.[1]
Career
Birkett began his legal career in 1981 as an Assistant State's Attorney. He worked in this position until October 1, 1996, when he became the DuPage County State's Attorney. During this time, he served as Chief of the Major Crimes Unit (1985-1986), Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division (1986-1991) and Chief of the Criminal Division (1991-1996).[1][2]

Birkett ran unopposed for re-election in the March 20, 2012 Republican primary, as well as the Nov. 6, 2012 general election, and was elected to replace John "Jack" O'Malley.[3][4]
