Joseph P. Gill (b. August 30, 1957, in Buffalo, New York) is the former Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources. He was appointed to the position by Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) effective May 21, 2013. Gill replaced John Griffin, who stepped down to become O'Malley's chief of staff.[1] Gill was succeeded by Mark Belton, an appointee of Gov. Larry Hogan (R), in March 2015.[2]

Biography

Gill is a native of Buffalo, N.Y. He attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate degree and in 1982 he graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center. Gill began his career as a law clerk for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and later earned admission to the Maryland Bar.[3] In 1987, Gill took a job with the office of the Attorney General of Maryland as assistant attorney general in contract litigation. He eventually became deputy counsel for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.[4]

Gill assumed office as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources May 21, 2013. He succeeded six-year officeholder John Griffin upon Griffin's appointment as then-Governor O'Malley's chief of staff.

Prior to his appointment, Gill served as deputy secretary of the department of natural resources from 2010-2013 and the department's principal counsel from 1996-2010.[3][5]
