Joseph Kevin McKay is a former acting justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term in the 2nd Judicial District of New York. He was appointed to this position in 2001. He has also served on the New York City Criminal Court from 1984 until 2013.[1][2]

Education

McKay received his A.B. from Fordham University in 1966 and his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1969.[1]

Career

McKay began his career in 1969 as an assistant district attorney in New York County. In 1974, he joined the law firm of Hays, St John, Abramson & Heilbron, where he worked as an associate until 1979 and then a partner until 1981. He also served as a panel member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel of Attorneys (of the U.S. Southern District of New York) from 1975 to 1981 and as panel chair and member of the New York City Arbitration Program from 1979 to 1981. He then worked as inspector general for the N.Y.C. Department of Sanitation from 1981 until his judicial appointment in 1983. From 1998 to 2003, he also taught as an adjunct associate professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York.

McKay began his judicial career in 1983 when he was appointed to the New York City Civil Court. The following year, he was appointed to the New York City Criminal Court. He was reappointed to this court in 1994 and 2004. He also served as an acting supreme court justice from 1992 to 1997. He was later appointed an acting supreme court justice of Kings County in 2001.[1]
