MAUI, Hawaii: On March 18, 2011, Joseph L. Wildman was appointed by Gov. Neil Abercrombie to a 10-year term on the Maui Circuit Court.[1] Wildman has worked as an attorney with the law firm of Takitani and Agaran since 2004. A graduate of the University of Hawaii-Manoa, Wildman's law degree is from the Southwestern University School of Law.[2]

Abercrombie, the recently-elected Democratic Governor of Hawaii, appointed Wildman to replace the retiring Joel E. August. The appointment must be confirmed by the Hawaii State Senate before it takes effect.[1]

When Abercrombie announced the appointment of Wildman, he issued a statement saying, "I have full trust and faith in Joe's experience and judgment. He always put the interests of the people first and I believe he will serve honorably on the Second Circuit."[1]

Wildman's name was one of several submitted to Gov. Abercrombie by the Hawaii Judicial Selection Commission. According to Section 4 of Article VI of the Hawaii Constitution, the state's judicial selection commission must submit a list of 4-6 candidates to the governor when there is a vacancy on one of the Hawaii Circuit Courts.

Previous Gov. Linda Lingle would typically make the names of all the nominees submitted by the judicial commission available to the public, and would solicit the public's views on them. Gov. Abercrombie has elected not to follow this practice.[1]
