Joseph Large was a 2014 Republican candidate for District 9 of the Montana State Senate.[1]

Campaign themes

2014

Large's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Budget/Spending

In the last Legislative session, the House and Senate chose to pass a bills that increased Montana's budget by 13%. This radically increased spending cannot be allowed to continue. Federal Government plans, like the temporary Medicaid increase, would have compounded current problems into much larger ones in coming years. If we continue with this kind of fiscal irresponsibility in the future, Montana will find itself in debt, much like the rest of this country.

My competitor voted for almost every opportunity to raise spending in Montana while voting down almost every budget cut to accommodate for the extra $500,000,000 in spending

Obamacare
The affordable health care act (Obamacare) is a train wreck that has resulted in more people losing their healthcare plans than new people getting health care. Many people were not allowed to keep plans that they had for years and liked because the federal government deemed these plans “inferior” and forced people to pay double and triple for new plans. The Montana government and people of Montana need to fight the implementation of Obamacare. The Affordable Health Care Act needs to be wiped off the law books and the federal government needs to get out of our lives.

My competitor voted for many of the bills necessary to allow Montana to comply with ObamaCare (HB 250, SB 395, HB 623)

Education
Montana currently has a highly rated, effective education system. According to 2010 Census data, Montana ranks 6th in high school graduation rates in the US and 21st in college graduation. Well above the national average. However, in the last session the Montana Legislation passed SB 175, a 54 page bill, part of which set up a “K-12 Data task force” that adds unnecessary levels of bureaucracy to our education system and allowed for the implementation of “Common Core” in the Montana education system. This will cost Montanans more tax dollars and add burdens to our education administration and staff unnecessarily. The Montana Government should establish accreditation and performance standards, and then give the schools the freedom they need to effectively and efficiently teach our children.

My competitor sponsored the bill that allowed for the adoption of common core in Montana Schools (SB 175)

Jobs in Montana
Montana’s greatest and most precious resource is our children. We care for them, protect them, educate them, and then have to watch them leave Montana because of a lack of jobs in the state. Forbes Magazine ranks Montana as 26th for “Best states for Business”, The US Bureau of Economic Analysis ranks Montana 46th in Per Capita GDP. We can do better than this. Montana needs to create an environment that will draw business into the state and make it simpler for small businesses to flourish throughout all of Montana.[2][3]
