I am in business with my father and brother selling food to restaurants. My father is an immigrant who came to this country with nothing. He has been working incredibly hard for 50 years. He bought Sahr's Poultry Farm on Curry Road in 2001. At the time, we primarily sold chicken to Chinese restaurants. Over 20 years we expanded our product line and recently moved to a larger warehouse in Amsterdam. We've always maintained a small crew and worked a lot of hours. My visions and ideas for the company were very different from my father's when I first started working at the business at 21. Within the family business, our wills have contended against each other, and I have learned how to bring stubborn people around to my ideas. I have also always sought to make peace when discord emerged in the company. I was raised Catholic but I came to believe in the power and resurrection of Jesus when I was 27. In trying to understand the world around me, I've come to value the form of government we've inherited, and the Constitution that forms its bedrock. I've had little respect for the media, national politics, and politicians. I didn't think Donald Trump was credible when he first came around, but found his message refreshing and courageous as the attacks around him unfolded. I am saddened by the lies that distort his statements and agenda, and my heart has followed this path that has led me into government, advocating for conservative principles and fidelity to the Constitution.
  • Our country is dangerously divided. It is hard for people of different views to talk. It is the responsibility of Legislators to work together to find solutions and common ground. I believe in making peace, and working through tough circumstances with the mind of Christ.
  • New York taxes and spends and taxes too much, and residents are fleeing at an alarming pace. We need to look at assistance programs, and create incentives that actually help people, not waste money and inhibit progress.
  • We need to promote Law and Order. Bail Reform, and the HALT Act need to be repealed, as they do not work. We need to stem the rise in crime, especially as inflation makes life increasingly difficult.
We need to support local farms and farming. A local food infrastructure will help insulate our community from food shortages and rising costs. The industrial food system has led to a lot of efficiency in how food is farmed and delivered, but there has been a loss in quality and nutrition; and we as a people have lost our connection with the land. Big Ag benefits from economies of scale, but also benefits from government subsidies and policies that make it hard for small farmers to compete with the low costs the industrial food system enjoys. We need to create opportunities for local farmers to be able to sell to markets, restaurants, and consumers by making an even playing field, and getting rid of onerous regulations. We also need to promote urban agriculture. Farming is a gratifying pursuit and brings life to blighted communities. There are many exciting developments in agriculture in the 21st century such as aquaponics, indoor growing, and the ancillary network of packaging, selling, delivering, and cooking. Promoting farming, nutrition, and healthy living will always be a passion of mine as a legislator. Advocating for mental health, and mental health awareness is an urgent need New York can lead in identifying. Our health care system is broken on multiple levels and healing the mental health of a society traumatized by two years of Covid is necessary to avoid the large costs associated with late treatment. I will always advocate for the most efficient use of tax dollars.
