Joseph McLaughlin (Second Circuit)
Joseph Michael McLaughlin was a federal appeals judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit based in New York City. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Prior to joining the circuit court, McLaughlin served on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He joined the district court in 1981 after an appointment from Ronald Reagan. At the time of appointment, he was a professor at Fordham Law. McLaughlin assumed senior status on March 20, 1998.[1] McLaughlin passed away on August 8, 2013 after fighting pneumonia.[2]
Education
McLaughlin graduated from Fordham College with his bachelor's degree in 1954 and later graduated from Fordham University School of Law with his bachelor's of Law degree in 1959. McLaughlin also graduated from New York University School of Law with his Masters degree in 1964.
Military service
McLaughlin served in the United State Army Corps of Engineers as a Captain from 1955 to 1957.[1]
Professional career
McLaghlin served as a private practice practicing law in New York City from 1959 to 1961 before becoming a full-fledged professor at Fordham Law from 1961 to 1971. He was the Dean of Fordham Law School, in addition to being a full fledged professor, from 1971 to 1981. McLaughlin has also served as a adjunct professor at St. John's University since 1982.[1]
Judicial career
Second Circuit
On the recommendation of New York U.S. Senator Al D'Amato, McLaughlin was nominated by President George Bush on July 10, 1990, to a seat vacated by Judge Lawrence Pierce as Pierce assumed senior status. McLaughlin was confirmed by the Senate on October 12, 1990 on unanimous consent of the Senate and received commission on October 17, 1990.[3] McLaughlin assumed senior status on March 20, 1998[1]
Eastern District of New York
On the recommendation of New York U.S. Senator Al D'Amato, McLaughlin was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on July 29, 1981, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. McLaughlin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 25, 1981, and received commission on September 28, 1981. McLaughlin left the Southern District of New York on October 18, 1990, due to his appointment to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.[1]
