Joseph Spero was the chief magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He was appointed to the court on March 13, 1999, and retired on March 12, 2023.[1]

Education

Judge Spero received his B.A. degree from Grinnell College in 1977 and his J.D. from Columbia University in 1981.[1]

Career

Judge Spero began his career in 1981 as a law clerk on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He joined the law firm of Skaden, Arps, et al. in 1982 and the firm of Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass, LLP in 1984. He became a partner of the latter in 1989. He worked in this position and as a Judge Pro Tem for the San Francisco Superior Court until 1999.[1]
