Dr. Joseph Thornton, ASP 2026 Candidate for Florida House District 10

Dr. Joseph Thornton is a longtime Florida resident, physician, educator, and advocate for justice and community health. A partially retired psychiatrist, Dr. Thornton has spent his career serving those most often overlooked—veterans, individuals with mental illness, and incarcerated populations.

He brings decades of leadership experience, including roles as Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health at the North Florida VA and Medical Executive Director at both Union Correctional Institution and the North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center. In each position, Dr. Thornton has worked to protect the vulnerable, reduce violence, and promote dignity for all.

Locally, he founded the Alachua Area Medical Reserve Corps and has lived in the Gainesville/Alachua area for over 20 years. He is committed to practical, community-based solutions that improve lives across rural and urban areas alike.

Dr. Thornton stands firmly against the death penalty—an issue informed by years providing care on death row and consulting in capital cases.

A teacher of bioethics with a focus on Artificial Intelligence, he believes new technologies must serve justice and human dignity—not replace them.

Dr. Thornton is running to bring thoughtful, hopeful leadership to Tallahassee. He is not a career politician, but a public servant dedicated to working across divides and delivering real solutions for the people of District 10.
  • Dr. Thornton is running to bring thoughtful, hopeful leadership to Tallahassee. He is not a career politician, but a public servant dedicated to working across divides and delivering real solutions for the people of District 10. This campaign can make a difference even before the election by growing the third party movement to break the destructive duopoly of 2 increasingly radicalized authoritarian, political parties. Specific growth within the American Solidarity Party emphasizes to current office holders a renewed citizen demand for person centered government for life, justice and freedom.
  • The foundation for Dr Thorntons campaign is the principle of human dignity. As a Catholic Dr Thornton believes our human dignity comes the Triune God and our creation in their image. Our right to life and human dignity is not dependent of age, sex, ethnicity, citizenship. physical strength or intellect. Our right to life stems from our human dignity and cannot be forfeited to another human being. Dr. Thornton is pro-life throughout the lifespan from conception to natural death. Within this frame work Dr. Thornton stands firmly against the death penalty. Our state can immediately support human dignity by stopping killing people. Our state must also always treat detainees of any status with respect for human dignity.

Life and justice. Stop killing prisoners for political gain and seek justice by addressing the thousands of unsolved homicide cold cases in Florida. Support families with child support services, just wages, and protected leave. Support fair wages for all workers, especially those disproportionately impacted by government-subsidized AI technology. The government must ensure that companies do not freely reap profits from AI without responsibility for the people who have contributed to its creation ( ie, all of us).
I grew up as an admirer of Dr Albert Schweitzer.
I have good listening skills and the ability to see different points of view. I can synthesize a large amount of information and make decisions, even in the face of conflict. I developed these skills in my years as a psychiatrist, education and health administrator.
Commitment to upholding an oath to support the Constitution. A commitment based on foundational principles and not a person or cult. Accountability
I want to make a difference in our community so that we treat each other with respect, feel truly grateful for our lives and communities, and people have more faith, hope, and love. Measurable indicators of this impact will be a shift in more third-party voter registrations, especially increased registration in the American Solidarity Party.
The most profound historical event was the assassination of President Kennedy when I was age 9. Several other early events included the 1960 Democratic convention (my family was interested because of a Texan), nuclear bomb drills of ducking under our desks and the Beatles on Ed Sulivan.
I worked ages 11-19 mowing yards., Age 16 to 19 I also worked as a grocery assistant (bag boy) for Piggly Wiggly.
The Bible (Catholc revised version) - saved my life and soul. In terms of secular books, it would be Schweitzer's autobiographical 'Out of my life and thought."
Rarely does a song get stuck in my head. There are many songs that I rotate. One of the most consistent songs is The Logical Song by Supertramp.
Conflict in work/ life balance, conflict in academics and action
Joint commitment to serve the citizens of Florida. The 2 branches need to work cooperatively.
Protecting human dignity. The greatest challenge in human history is upon us with AI technology. If we are going to assert to machines that are far more intelligent and physically powerful than we are, that we have primacy over them, then we must demonstrate our special dignity by stopping State killing and prohibiting abuse of prisoners. AI is watching and learning from us.
Previous experience in government or politics is beneficial for state legislators but there are other avenues to gaining the essential skill set.
Government is a collaborative endeavor. Being able to work with others, to listen and attempt to understand each other's positions and experiences, is essential for a more harmonious society.
I admire Lawton Chiles. I worked in the State prison system while Lawton Chiles was Governor. I appreciated his integrity as he dealt with difficult issues in that department. In that aspect I would model after him.
What did the catfish say when it hit the wall?
During emergencies, the legislature should support the Governor as needed for short period of time.
A moratorium on executions. The governor can simply stop the current killing spree and demonstrate that our society operates on profound principles rather than narrow satisfactions.
Justice, Health, Technology
As a physician I have taken care of patients on the principles of autonomy and justice for 40 years. I believe the same in government, citizens must be accurately informed in order to participate in their government.
I support the identification and registration of voters and I support respect for registered voters. Voting opportunities should be equitable.
